Day 3
Once again we got a late start and we both took showers and prepared for another impossibly steamy day. I checked the oil and other fluids in the bus and Jess took care of feeding the animals and cleaning the cat box. I definitely got the better of the deal. This continued throughout the trip. Today’s goal was the Wisconsin Dells area and hopefully another campground. It was an extremely uneventful day. Chugga-Chugga-Chugga was the sound of the engine and it felt just like that to me all day. We just kept pushing on. We drove in and out of farmland and city throughout the day. The cat’s by now had settled in and didn’t seem to be having such a hard time and were much more relaxed. The Time Machine seemed to make great time. The roads were flat and the driving was good. Once again Jess and I made unscheduled switches on who was driving and it seemed every time she got in the driver’s seat we hit some road construction. I thought it funny but I am sure she didn’t. Our travels today took us through Cleveland and Toledo (Ohio), South Bend (Indiana), and through Chicago (Illinois), finishing the day in Wisconsin at the Dells. As a young boy I had been to the Dells before to visit my uncle who lived there. As a boy I thought it to be an amazing place and I have always told people that it might be the only state not located on an ocean that I might be willing to live in. Time changes all things and I guess this is no exception. The Dells area is now a tourist Mecca, reminiscent to me of Florida and those populated strips I have grown to hate. The Dells had casinos and amusement parks, but seemed to lack some of that special natural beauty that I remember as a kid.
Once again it was great to see the faces of the other campers as we pulled in. The farther west we went the more surprised of where we were from and where we were going. Most people were either very envious or thought we were nuts. Jess and I understood their emotions. I think we arrived at about 8. The campground was located directly beside a roller coaster at Nah's Ark Amusement Park. It was another long day. We were immediately greeted at our campsite by the neighbors and one of his sons. When we let the dogs out he immediately came over for a visit along with his parents. When this boy saw the cats in the window he was absolutely amazed and had a hundred questions. I was patient with him even though I really just wanted to have a couple beers and relax. The same young man visited us first thing in the morning asking me some of the same questions as the night before. Jess deals with this stuff so much better than I do. I will give Wisconsin this, it was the prettiest state we had been through since we left Maine (parts of New York were nice but not the highway driving). It might have just been all that boring flat land and uninteresting landscape we had seen for the last few days. Just City and farms, city and farms. It was another day of driving on those crappy tires and we were both happy we had made it through another day without any catastrophes. We went to bed at 11:30 both starting to get a little ragged driving through the time changes. Overall a good day, we both like no big surprises.
